Horse Sponsorships

Our Horses

Our horses are our most important therapy aid. They are carefully selected for their size and temperament, and tested to ensure compatibility with the program. A variety in size and gait allows PARD to serve a variety of riders. For example, Bobby, our smallest therapy horse, is best suited for smaller riders or those with limited flexion in their hips or pelvis area. Frank, on the other hand, is our largest horse and can support the most rider weight without being too tall for our sidewalkers who walk along beside the rider providing emotion and physical support during the lesson.

While our assisted program only runs in the summer months, horses require care year-round. Our horses are boarded at Wendon Hills Equestrian Centre, the location our facility operates out of. There they receive excellent care from barn owners Wendy and Brendon Carruthers and their staff. The horses are watered and given hay each day, but PARD also supplements their diet with additional feed as needed. In addition to food and water, a few of our horses require regular farrier visits and all the horses receive annual vet checks and vaccinations.
All of these expenses add up, plus all the other unexpected expenses that arise thought the year. Have you heard about Doc's mischievous side? His bad habit of snatching and destroying Stormy's blankets can really add up! The total cost of the horses are the biggest operating cost at PARD. There are often grants for special equipment and such, but PARD actively fundraises to cover our operating expenses. Fundraising is a costly and timely activity (although we love our fun events) so horse sponsorship is the easiest way to ensure our horse expenses are covered and our volunteers can do what they love most...helping our riders enjoy horseback riding lessons!

Platinum Sponsosrs 2018, 2019, 2020
In 2018 the Gainey Foundation generously commited to sponsosring Bobby, "the little white horse", for three years (coincendently sharing the namesake of Mr. Bob Gainey himself). Bobby benefits from indoor board during the winter to help him maintain his weight and this extra cost is covered by the Platinum Sponsosrship.
ABOUT The Gainey Foundation...
After the sudden loss of Laura, the third of Bob Gainey’s four children, in December 2006, the family decided to honour both Laura and her late mother, Cathy who passed away in 1995, with a foundation dedicated to funding environmental and arts programs for youth. The foundation’s initial goal was met by raising $2 million in its first two years, building a lasting and fitting legacy for these two special people.
